About Sparrow

Sparrow ties moments in your life to automatic donations. For example, when you go out to eat, the Sparrow app can add 3% to your bill and automatically donate to a hunger charity. When LeBron hits a three-pointer, provide malaria bed-nets. Or when Arya Stark kills someone in Game of Thrones, give to women’s empowerment. Sparrow builds personalized funds of trustworthy charities and tracks your impact so you understand how your donations make a difference.

Here’s our landing page, AngelList, and early private beta for iPhone (NOTE: force quit and reopen the app after you install it through Testflight to make sure you’re on the latest version (you’ll see a version # on the top-left corner of the first screen) and Android (that’s it). You can also join our early-adopters Slack group where you can get updates, suggest rules/features, report bugs, and ask us stuff directly.

Lead Mobile Engineer

We’re looking for a mission-driven iOS engineer to join Sparrow’s founders in our beautiful home-office in Oakland. You’ll lead the direction of the app and shape the future of the organization. Our goal is to move a billion dollars to high-impact nonprofits by 2022, and we’d love for you to join us on this journey.

It’s a very exciting time as things are accelerating quickly. We’ve recently raised a seed round from a group of mission-aligned investors (including Betaworks, Jaan Tallinn, and Matthew Dellavedova). Now, we’re testing our private iOS beta.

We’re a close group of friends with a history of successful collaborations. Before Sparrow, we worked with Dan Ariely at Duke running a behavioral science accelerator and researching donation psychology. One of us went through YCombinator, and we’re all deeply involved in the effective altruism movement. We couldn’t be more excited about what’s next together.

What you’ll do

Design, develop, ship, and update mobile apps for iOS. Own the entire app codebase, and maintain it with testing and refactoring. Develop in an agile environment. Collaborate with the technical team across the stack. Adapt and improve the interface based on a range of research studies. Contribute in the product process: thinking through UX and designing beautiful UI. Communicate openly and develop skills as a mentor. Help estimate, plan, and execute on projects, features, and integrations. Spend a lot of time thinking about how to make the world a better place.

Who you are

Must have

2+ years of software development experience. Strong CS fundamentals and problem-solving skills. 1+ year of iOS development experience (Swift or React Native). Experience collaborating with back-end engineers on apps that rely on an API.

Nice to have

Ability to contribute on product strategy and knowledge of UX/UI design principles. Pride in shipping elegant and beautiful products. Interested in the evidence-based philanthropy / effective altruism movements. Appreciation of evidence, humility, and simplicity. Probably play a lot of boardgames.
